Colors, Words, and Emotions: Stories of Hope from the Ukrainian Community

In the framework of the project „Assistance for refugees at the transit center in Timișoara and support for citizens arriving from Ukraine” (Output 2), carried out by AIDRom with the support of UNHCR, each day brings new opportunities for those in need of support – whether through learning, creative expression, or simply through moments of human connection.

February 17 – The Power of Dialogue and Self-Care

Twelve Ukrainian women in Timișoara and seven women and girls in Arad participated in self-care sessions, discussing menstrual health and well-being. Through an interactive game, they dispelled myths, shared personal experiences, and left feeling more empowered. Meanwhile, four Ukrainians practiced Romanian at the Speaking Club, gaining vocabulary and confidence. In an online session, participants engaged in a role-play dialogue set at the market, applying their knowledge in practical contexts. One participant enthusiastically shared: „Thank you for these lessons, it’s exactly what I needed to overcome my fear of speaking Romanian!”

February 18 – Art as a Universal Language

During a touching art therapy session, a Ukrainian woman and her child used play dough to shape emotions. The mother crafted birds, symbols of freedom and hope, while the child sculpted plush animals, representing safety and comfort.

February 19 – First Brushstrokes on a New Journey

Seven women and two young girls painted their first landscapes. Even those who had never held a brush before created unique artworks, discovering that creativity has no limits.

February 20 – Movement, Connection, and Confidence

A support group session introduced six Ukrainian women to gentle physical movement as a tool for stress relief. Through simple exercises and interactive games, they discovered that laughter and community support are just as important for well-being. Meanwhile, ten children and seven women took part in a special treasure hunt, where kindness and gratitude were the hidden clues.

February 21 – Beauty Created by Their Own Hands

Nine women and a teenage girl learned to make their own body cream using natural ingredients. Beyond the final product, the experience gave them a sense of independence and self-confidence.

Thanks to the dedication and care of the AIDRom team, these activities bring comfort, trust, and hope to those forced to leave everything behind. Step by step, the Ukrainian community in western Romania is rebuilding their lives, surrounded by support and human warmth.
